ABOUT THE SCHOOL >

Why Families in Southfields Choose Liberty Woodland School

Southfields offers families an attractive mix of peaceful urban living and calming green spaces. Families from Southfields choose Liberty Woodland School for a similar reason; we strike a balance between strong academic qualifications and joyful, meaningful learning rooted in the outdoors.

There are many other reasons why families across London choose us:

  • We are proud to achieve academic outcomes that are above national averages
  • We believe in the importance of outdoor learning and developing environmental awareness
  • We are an International Baccalaureate School and encourage our students to think independently and explore their curiosity
  • We give children access to vast green spaces and natural surroundings, helping us to protect their childhood
  • Mental health and well-being practices are a part of daily school life - we want to make sure our students are happy, healthy, and ready to learn
  • We make sure every child is deeply known by our teaching team, with small class sizes allowing us to provide individual attention to our students
  • We follow a 4-day week, no homework, and no uniform structure, giving children the ability to learn with freedom

Our Approach to Primary Education

Morden Lodge is home to our primary school, where children from Southfields can engage with learning in a supportive environment, helping them develop their confidence and independence.

Project based learning

Our primary school students engage in project based learning and produce a long-term project on a subject of their choice. Learning goes beyond surface-level knowledge acquisition and focuses more on real-world applications.

We want to make education relevant and meaningful to the lives of our students, as well as intellectually stimulating.

Outdoor play and education

Outdoor play and outdoor learning are an important part of our primary school education. Children have access to 4.5 acres of green space and engage in plenty of natural movement.

This provides many benefits for children in early years education by supporting their physical health and the development of key motor skills. Play and exploration also build confidence and curiosity in children.

Building independence and confidence

We give children the freedom to make their own decisions about their learning. They choose topics they want to learn more about and develop project proposals based on those topics. Children then share their ideas and findings among their peers.

We believe children’s learning shouldn’t be directed, but rather guided. Our dedicated teaching team are on hand to support students with decision-making skills and self-confidence, preparing them for the transition into secondary school education.

Our Approach to Secondary Education

The secondary school is based in Ivy Lodge. As an IB school, we offer secondary students from Southfields an alternative to GCSEs that encourages deep, independent learning.

The International Baccalaureate (IB)

Liberty Woodland School is one of the few International Baccalaureate secondary schools near Southfields. The IB is an alternative approach to traditional GCSEs and is highly respected and valued by universities and employers.

The IB allows students to build a deep understanding across a range of subjects. They are encouraged to think critically and consider global perspectives. Engaging with the IB curriculum creates well-rounded and responsible global citizens who have a comprehensive understanding of the world we live in.

Self-directed learning

We operate on a 4-day school week schedule. This allows our secondary school students to engage with independent, self-directed learning instead of coming into school on Fridays.

This flipped learning approach gives young people the freedom to work on personal projects of their choosing. They choose when and how to work on their projects, helping to prepare them for further education where self-directed study is crucial.

A focus on environmentalism

We want our students to be a positive force for change in the world. That’s why we are committed to teaching them about the environmental challenges we are currently facing, and how they can be responsible for the environment in which they live. Environmentalism is closely tied to our curriculum.

Our community

We have built a supportive school community where our families from Southfields and across London can come together and build strong connections.

We arrange different events throughout the year that bring staff, students, and parents together. This includes exhibitions in winter, spring, and summer where students present their work to authentic audiences, or experience mornings where parents learn alongside their children.

We approach mental health in primary school and secondary school with care. We know how important it is for our students to be happy and fully present so they can make the most of learning.
