Our Approach to Primary Education

Our primary school is based in Morden Lodge and offers children from Fulham a supportive learning environment that allows them to grow in confidence and independence.

Project based learning

Project based learning is an important part of our primary school teaching that encourages learning to go beyond surface-level knowledge acquisition. Children get to focus on the real-world application of learning, choosing a topic to produce a long-term project on.

By following a project based learning approach, we aim to make education intellectually challenging, as well as relevant and meaningful to children’s lives.

Outdoor play and education

The school has access to 4.5 acres of natural space, and we encourage regular outdoor play and outdoor learning. We also incorporate a lot of natural movement as part of our primary curriculum.

An outdoor approach to learning supports the physical health of children in early years, as well as the development of key motor skills. Children also get to build their confidence through play and exploration.

Building independence and confidence

We believe in the importance of letting children make decisions about their learning. Our students are encouraged to choose which topics they want to learn more about, develop project proposals based on their chosen topic, and share their findings and ideas with their peers.

Our dedicated teaching team don’t direct our students’ learning, they guide it - supporting children to build on their self-confidence and decision-making skills. By giving children the freedom to explore topics as they please, we aim to prepare them for the transition into secondary education.

Our Approach to Secondary Education

Our secondary school is located in Ivy Lodge, and offers families in Fulham access to a progressive, IB education that encourages deep, independent learning.

EXPLORE OUR SECONDARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM >

The International Baccalaureate (IB)

Our secondary school students follow the International Baccalaureate curriculum. The IB is a well-respected and highly valued alternative to traditional GCSEs and is widely recognised by universities and employers.

Students build a deep understanding of a range of subjects, including language and literature, language acquisition, sciences, mathematics, arts, and more. They are encouraged to think critically and focus on different global perspectives, helping to create well-rounded and responsible global citizens.

Self-directed learning

Instead of coming into school on Fridays, secondary school students are given the opportunity to practice independent, self-directed learning. They are given the freedom to work on their own personal projects for a subject of their choosing whenever and however they please.

Our flipped learning approach helps to prepare students for further education, where self-directed study forms a major part of learning.

A focus on environmentalism

We are committed to teaching children about the complex environmental challenges we are currently facing as part of our curriculum. We focus on environmentalism to inspire children to be a positive force for change and be responsible for the environment they live in.

Our community

At Liberty Woodland School, we arrange a variety of events throughout the year that aim to bring our students, staff, and parents together. We have built a supportive school community where everyone can get involved and build strong connections.

For example, we host exhibitions throughout the year in winter, spring, and summer, where students can present their work to authentic audiences. We also put on experience mornings where parents can join in with lessons and learn alongside their children.

Mental health and well-being support

We support the mental health and well-being of our primary school and secondary school students by integrating helpful well-being practices into every school day through morning meetings and built-in time for mindfulness and meditation.

It is important that our students are happy, healthy, and fully present so they can make the most of learning in a safe and supportive environment.
