Our Approach to Primary Education

Our primary school, based in Morden Lodge, provides children from Wandsworth with a supportive learning environment that encourages exploration, curiosity, and enables them to grow in confidence and independence.

Project based learning

A core part of our primary school curriculum is project based learning. As part of this, children are able to focus on the real-world application of learning, rather than surface-level knowledge acquisition. They choose the topic they would like to produce a long-term project on.

Project based learning makes education intellectually challenging whilst ensuring it is relevant and meaningful to our students’ lives.

Outdoor play and education

With access to 4.5 acres of natural space, we encourage primary school children to regularly engage with outdoor play, natural movement, and outdoor learning as part of our curriculum.

This helps support the physical health and development of children in early years, and allows children to build confidence and independence through play and exploration.

Building independence and confidence

At Liberty Woodland School, we believe children should be able to make decisions about their learning. Our primary school children are given opportunities to choose topics they would like to learn more about, develop project proposals on their chosen topic, and share their work and ideas with their peers.

Our teaching team help guide students’ learning rather than direct it. This aims to help build self-confidence and decision-making skills, as well as prepare children for the transition into secondary education.

Our Approach to Secondary Education

Ivy Lodge, the home of our secondary school, gives students from Wandsworth access to deep, independent learning through a progressive, IB education.

EXPLORE OUR SECONDARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM >

The International Baccalaureate (IB)

As an International Baccalaureate secondary school, students can build a deep understanding of a range of subjects, from language and literature, language acquisition, and arts, to mathematics and sciences. The IB requires children to think critically and consider global perspectives, moulding them into responsible global citizens.

The IB curriculum is a well-respected and highly valued alternative to traditional GCSEs and is widely recognised by universities and employers.

Self-directed learning

Instead of coming into school on Fridays, our secondary school children are encouraged to engage with independent, self-directed learning. They are given the opportunity to work on a personal project of their choosing whenever and however they want.

Following a flipped learning approach helps prepare students for university-level education, where self-directed study is expected.

A focus on environmentalism

Environmentalism is an important part of our secondary school curriculum. We strongly believe young people should be taught about the complex environmental challenges we are currently facing and how they can be responsible for the world they live in. We aim to inspire them to be a positive force for change.

Our community

We host a range of events throughout the year that bring our students, parents, and staff together. We are proud to have built a supportive school community that allows families from locations across London to build strong connections and get involved.

Our winter, spring, and summer exhibitions allow children to present their work to authentic audiences, and our experience mornings allow parents to experience one of our lessons and learn alongside their children.

Mental health and well-being support

We want to protect the mental health and well-being of our primary school and secondary school students, which is why we integrate helpful well-being practices into every school day. These are done through morning meetings and timetabled mindfulness and meditation sessions.

The health and happiness of our students are a priority to us, and we want them to be fully present and prepared to learn in a safe and supportive environment.
