Our Approach to Primary Education

Our primary school, based in Morden Lodge, offers children from Wimbledon a supportive environment where they can grow in confidence and independence.

Project based learning

Project based learning is a core part of our primary curriculum, encouraging children to work on a long-term project exploring a real-world topic of their choice. Learning goes beyond surface-level knowledge acquisition and instead focuses on the real-world application of learning. This ensures learning is intellectually challenging and academically rigorous, as well as relevant, meaningful, and purposeful to children’s lives.

Outdoor play and education

We utilise our school grounds to encourage regular outdoor play, outdoor learning, and lots of natural movement as part of our primary school curriculum. An outdoor approach to learning in early years is important in supporting the physical health of children, the development of motor skills, and building confidence through exploration.

Building independence and confidence

At Liberty Woodland School, we enable children to make choices about their learning. They are given opportunities to decide on topics they would like to learn more about and develop project proposals on their chosen topic. They are supported to present work and share ideas with their peers.

Our teaching team are on hand to guide their students’ learning rather than direct it, developing their self-confidence and preparing them for the transition into secondary education.

Our Approach to Secondary Education

Ivy Lodge, home to our private secondary school, is suitable for families in Wimbledon looking for a progressive education where deep learning is encouraged above rote memorisation.

EXPLORE OUR SECONDARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM >

The International Baccalaureate (IB)

We follow the International Baccalaureate curriculum, an alternative to traditional GCSEs that is widely recognised and highly valued by universities and employers. The IB offers a wide range of subjects, including language and literature, language acquisition, sciences, mathematics, individuals and societies, arts, and more.

The International Baccalaureate builds a deep understanding of subjects rather than memorisation, with a focus on different global perspectives and critical thinking. Ultimately, the IB develops students into well-rounded and responsible global citizens.

Self-directed learning

We encourage young people to practice independent, self-directed learning through their own personal projects. Instead of coming into school on Fridays, our secondary students are given autonomy over their learning and can decide how and when they learn about their chosen subject. We believe our flipped learning approach prepares students well for university-level education, where self-directed study is important.

A focus on environmentalism

We build environmentalism into our curriculum, teaching young people how to be responsible during a time of environmental unrest and uncertainty. We teach children about the real-world, complex environmental challenges that we are facing and inspire them to make an impactful change on the world.

Our community

We are proud to have built a supportive school community for families across London, including Wimbledon, where staff, students, and parents can get involved and build strong relationships.

We arrange a variety of events and experiences where our staff, students, and families come together to celebrate good work and learn together. This includes exhibitions throughout the year in winter, spring, and summer, where students present their work to authentic audiences, and experience mornings where parents join lessons to learn alongside their children.

Mental health and well-being support

The mental health and well-being of our primary and secondary school students are of utmost importance to us. We make sure to integrate helpful well-being practices into every school day through our morning meetings and build in time for mindfulness and meditation.

We want our students to be happy, healthy, fully present, and prepared to learn in a safe and supportive environment.
