Our Approach to Primary Education

The primary school years are a period of curiosity and exploration. Our primary school, based in Morden Lodge, offer children from Putney a safe and supportive environment to develop individually and academically through mixed learning methods.

EXPLORE OUR PRIMARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM >

Project based learning

Primary school pupils learn through projects that encourage them to go beyond surface-level knowledge acquisition and focus on the real-world application of learning. Children engage in practical activities and peer discussions, building valuable problem-solving and communication skills.

Our project based learning approach aims to make learning meaningful, relevant, and intellectually challenging.

Outdoor play and education

Our students spend time outside engaging with nature, taking part in outdoor lessons and play sessions. Our school grounds are surrounded by 4.5 acres of green space, giving children space to learn through movement, practical activities, and exploration.

We understand the benefits of outdoor learning and play, supporting the development of our students’ physical health, key motor skills, confidence, and curiosity.

Building independence and confidence

At Liberty Woodland School, we give children ownership of their learning. Our teaching team guide our students’ learning rather than direct it, supporting them with their decision-making skills and self-confidence.

Children are given the freedom to decide on topics they want to learn more about, develop project proposals, and share their ideas and findings with their peers.

Our Approach to Secondary Education

Our secondary school, based in Ivy Lodge, aims to prepare students for adulthood, offering an IB education that facilitates deep, independent learning. Young people are given freedom to learn how they like and in ways that work best for them.

EXPLORE OUR SECONDARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM >

The International Baccalaureate (IB)

We are one of the few secondary schools near Putney that offer an International Baccalaureate curriculum. The IB is an alternative to traditional GCSEs and builds a deep understanding across a variety of subjects.

Students are taught to consider global perspectives and think critically, developing into well-rounded and responsible global citizens. IB qualifications are highly respected and valued by universities and employers.

Self-directed learning

Our students follow a 4-day school week, attending school Monday-Thursday. On Fridays, our secondary school students are encouraged to engage with independent, self-directed learning.

We give young people the freedom to work on personal projects of their choosing. They decide when and how to work on their projects. This helps prepare them for further education where self-directed study is important.

A focus on environmentalism

Environmentalism is a core part of our curriculum. We have scheduled lessons on environmentalism and the challenges our world is currently facing. We want our students to be a positive force for change and understand how they can be responsible for the environment in which they live.

Our community

We are proud to have developed a supportive community where families from Putney and other locations across London can come together and build strong connections.

Staff, students, and parents can attend events throughout the year to celebrate good work and learn alongside their children. This includes experience mornings and exhibitions in winter, spring, and summer, where students present work to authentic audiences.

  • Music
  • Drama
  • Forest skills
  • Gardening
  • Sports
  • Book club

We offer residential trips for students in Year 1 and above, and secondary school students can participate in a Service in Action programme.

Mental health and well-being support

We care about the mental health of our primary school and secondary school students and understand the impact it can have on happiness and motivation. That’s why we integrate helpful well-being practices into every school day.

We have morning meetings and timetabled sessions where children can practice mindfulness and meditation. We are dedicated to creating a safe and supportive environment where children are happy, fully present, and ready to make the most of learning.
